Digital Painting / Character Design / Environment Design / Landscape / Portrait / Manga & Comic / Animation

Students will gain insight into the entertainment art industry while working with digital software such as Photoshop, Procreate, and more. They will be also trained on how to visualize the original concepts into a finished art form. 

Familiarize yourself with the drawing tablets and software while learning the fundamentals of digital painting. If you are interested in illustration, character design, or entertainment art, but not sure where to start, this is the course for you. 

Digital Painting 1

Digital Painting 1 is designed to introduce fundamental digital painting techniques and workflows. Students will begin by familiarizing themselves with basic drawing tablets and their effective use. The course covers essential software functions such as creating documents, using brushes and erasers, and mastering simple coloring techniques. This course is tailored for beginners with no prior experience with electronic painting software, including those who have never used programs like Photoshop or Procreate.

Digital Painting 2

Building on the foundations of Digital Painting 1, this course helps students deepen their painting skills. Students will learn more realistic and complex rendering techniques, focusing on light, shadows, textures, and colors, along with mastering advanced features. This class is suitable for students with some traditional painting experience or those who have completed Digital Painting 1.

Digital Character Design

This course covers the basic techniques and methods of character design. Students will start with basic shape language and move on to fundamental world-concept design, character personality design, moodboards, basic body language, costume design, and coloring techniques to complete a character design or gather inspirations for future projects. This course is suitable for students interested in character design, illustration, graphic design, or those needing to design original characters.

Digital Game Environment Design

The Ashcan Environment Design course focuses on the creation of captivating digital environments from start to finish. Our classes emphasize environment design fundamentals -- perspective, composition, and storytelling -- as well as digital painting techniques to help create stunning environments and atmospheres.

Digital Manga & Comics

Do you have an idea for a comic and want to see it come to life? In our Manga and Comics program, students develop their own comics while applying artistic and technical techniques used by professional comic artists. Weekly lectures teach fundamental skills including but not limited to character design, paneling, and camera angles.

Digital 2D Animation

This foundational 2D animation course, based on Photoshop's animation features, teaches basic software functions such as creating new documents, setting up timelines, and adding keyframes. Students will learn fundamental animation principles and concepts, including keyframes, in-between frames, and easing in/out through techniques such as morphing, bouncing, waving, and rotation animation. This course is suitable for students interested in animation but without prior experience.
