How we teach

College Portfolio Preparation

Our Portfolio Preparation program consists of advanced courses designed to help students create their full body of art portfolio for art colleges and universities. Each student will be assigned with individual studio space and take personalized courses depending on the student's major of interest. We also provide all aspects of support in the college application process, including consultations, essay writing, application forms, photography of the portfolio, and communication with colleges.

We believe that anyone can learn the basic skills necessary to study Fine Arts. When students begin their studies at Ashcan Studio of Art, they are given a test to determine their level of ability. According to their abilities, they begin a curriculum through which they can develop technical skills in Drawing, Painting, and Sculpture, with individual attention and evaluation from instructors. These techniques include perspective, shading, color mixing, and 3D design.

College Transfer Applicant

Any student who will have completed at least 12 college credits before transferring to a new college is eligible for the Ashcan Portfolio Preparation program. (College admissions departments will ultimately decide upon, on a case-by-case basis, which credits are transferable.) College students of art or non-art majors with any experience level can make portfolios for majors such as Fine Art, Illustration, Animation, Fashion Design, Interior Design, Architecture, Graphic Design, Industrial Design, and others.

 Graduate School Applicant

Portfolio Preparation courses can help students with Bachelor’s degrees who are interested in furthering their education in visual studies. We work with each student to develop a major-specific, professional-level portfolio and assist with the graduate admissions process.

Ivy League Supplement.jpg

Ivy League Supplement

If students have talent in the Arts, Ivy League and other high-ranking liberal arts colleges recommend the Arts Supplement submission with their applications. An Arts Supplement is a portfolio of artwork that showcases a student’s creative and technical abilities. An outstanding supplement increases a student’s chances of getting accepted.

Individually Tailored Curriculum

Our courses are structured so that each student can focus on works related to their intended major or interest while receiving plenty of one-on-one teaching from our instructors. Content of each course will be adjusted in detail for each student depending on their interest, strong suit, and level of skills.

Portfolio Reviews from Colleges

Each year, we invite representatives from top art schools such as Parsons, Pratt, SVA, RISD, and Cooper Union, to visit our studios. They provide crucial information and insights about their programs, and they provide one-on-one and group critiques of our students’ works. This valuable opportunity gives students direct access to the opinions of admissions faculties.

Ashcan Annual Exhibition

Each year, we endeavor to show our students’ work at various venues throughout New York City. By exhibiting their pieces to the public, students feel pride in their work, as it is shown with optimal consideration in a professional setting. Throughout the experience, they will learn how to prepare their works for exhibition and how others might interpret and appreciate their artistic abilities.  Previous venues have included Queens Library, Arts@Renaissance in Brooklyn, Flushing Library, and Gallery Madison Park.
