Ashcan Studio’s Summer Pre-college Program provides college student and high school, middle school, elementary school students with an intensive Visual Arts learning experience. Together, faculty and students prepare for the art school admissions process and the creative development of an outstanding portfolio. All prospective students are encouraged to register before the beginning of each semester as places are limited. Registration after the beginning of the semester will be considered only if places are available.

Ashcan Summer visual arts course was developed to catapult and stimulate creativity through visual arts courses. We encourage artistic expression and experimentation in order to develop confidence, and openness to new creative ideas and cultures. The program teaches the historical and contemporary art techniques of sculpture, painting, drawing, design, and digital art. The Ashcan Studio Summer visual arts course is a Seven-week long program for students who wish to develop their skills and excel in the Visual Arts. Under the guidance of Ashcan Studio’s Instructors, students will participate in studio work, producing outstanding visual artwork. This program is for the most inexperienced artists up through advanced art students.
College Portfolio Preparation
Your portfolio of artwork is evidence of your artistic skills and concepts. A good portfolio is an indication to schools that you are a creative and talented student who will work hard and be successful. The Ashcan Studio Portfolio Preparation Summer Program is an eight-week long program for students who wish to enter the foundation year of a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree program, Transfer or a Masters in Fine Arts program (MFA). Under the guidance of Ashcan Studio’s Instructors, students will participate in studio work, producing a cohesive series of artworks using conventional and unconventional material in innovative ways.
Why is our summer intensive course so important?
Our Summer Intensive Program is designed for all Ashcan students who wish to apply to colleges the following Fall/Winter (for admittance the Fall of the following year). During the school year, high school and college students rightly must focus most of their time on their school work and so have limited time to dedicate to their portfolio. The Summer Intensive allows students to give their portfolio the necessary time and attention to develop to its highest quality. In addition, the summer at Ashcan is a focused, nurturing, and ambitious community of art students whose success influences one another. The daily art practice in a summer dedicated to the portfolio has been a huge element in the outstanding achievements of Ashcan’s students, allowing their portfolios to stand out so well to college recruiters. (Monday to Friday 10am-2pm and 3pm-7pm)
